Shoulda Woulda Coulda {Five Minute Friday}

Can you believe we've already knocked out the first week of May? This year is going by so very very fast, isn't it? There are just so many things that I wanted to have done this week, this month, this year...but sadly, I still haven't got to them yet. But it IS another week for Five Minute Friday--and the theme for this week is...should.

AND GO

Should
The word should has a couple definitions in the dictionary...
1. used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when criticizing someone's actions

2.used to indicate what is probable

3. used in a clause with “that” after a main clause describing feelings
We hear it all the time and use it all the time in our conversations...
Oh man, I should have KNOWN that was going to happen.
You really should make sure the jar lid is on tightly.
He clearly should have known that I was going to turn left.
I should have shut the door more carefully.

Should is a linking verb. It assists the action verbs to give them more emphasis. They imply making a choice to do whatever the action was. "Should make" "should have known" "should have shut". And in every situation it implies that it has not been done in the past or future at this time.

It has two sisters: Could and Would.

I remember when I was younger, one of my relatives--no, maybe it was a teacher. Or a coach. They always said "COULDA, WOULDA, AND SHOULDA are the excuses we give when we decide not to do something."

Isn't that the case?

I should have...but...
I could have...but...
I would have...but...

You know it. We do it. I do it. We like to give ourselves excuses to explain why we did or didn't do something, instead of just accepting that we made a choice and have to accept the actions for that choice.

Should is used in the Bible too. In every case, it is admonishing of an action that needs to be taken or wasn't taken. Here are a few you might be familiar with...

Ephesians 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

Ephesians 4:14-15 "that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—"

Psalms 32:8 "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye."

Ecclesiastes 3:14 "I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him."

I know that years ago, if I said "I really should..." in front of my mom, she would say, "So why don't you?"
And then I either had to give excuses or yes...do it!

And nothing has changed. I still have to do this.

So what's stopping YOU from doing your "shouldas"?
What excuses are you using to downplay choices you have made in your life?

Referencing the scriptures above, what is keeping you from walking in the ways of the Lord? What is keeping you from trusting in the Lord in ALL areas? The Lord our God lays out very clearly the path we SHOULD take. But He knows He gives us the ability to CHOOSE...so we have actually DO IT!

So let's stop with our shoulda, coulda, and woulda's...and DO IT!

AND STOP
