Taking Literature Further with LitWits Kits {Product Review}

I love teaching literature and I especially love teaching it in a unit study style. The challenge is finding a program that does all the "hard work" for providing hands-on projects as well as literature comprehension work. This is especially true for me when I took on the new role of teaching a literature class at my co-op to ages 12-16. It was a small group and I wanted to offer them more than the typical read and discuss literature experience. I had eyeballed several programs in the past, including a lesser-known resource called LitWits. Imagine my joy when I had to chance to review the LitWit Kits! I finally decided on My Side of the Mountain, The Phantom Tollbooth, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, and Around the World in Eighty Days. I really hoped it would be just what I was looking for to take our literature studies further and make them more meaningful and enjoyable for all!

We first explored Online Times Alive by City Creek Press, Inc. back in 2017 when my youngest was just 6. He was only just starting his math adventures, yet picked up on it pretty quickly. Since then, however, he's gotten a little weak at some of his times-tables, especially the sixes. Solar System: Online Unit Study from Techie Homeschool Mom {Curriculum Review}

If you have been a follower of the blog for a while, you know by now that our family does really well with unit studies when it comes to homeschooling certain topics. We love being able to bring together different resources and dive down different rabbit trails as we explore a topic. One of the hardest parts about a unit study, however, is the gathering of materials. We completed this review as a family with both boys working together on the assignments.

Our Thoughts on the Product

First off--I will just go ahead and tell you that this was possibly the EASIEST science course I have ever done. Why? Because I basically didn't have to do anything but pull the course up on my computer. Techie Homeschool Mom did everything else! And--NO BOOKS! Nothing. It truly is a "paper-free" unit study option.

Okay, so now that I have that out of the way, let me share what this program looks like and how we used it. First off, you will need to log in and just start the course. We easily completed all the assignments and videos with a Chrome browser. If you don't have good internet this course WILL have issues as it is 100% internet driven. There aren't any issues with navigation--simply login and get started!

These courses are designed for students who can read and navigate around the internet--so I would put this at starting with 2nd grade and up--unless this is being used by a family. We used it with a 3rd and 7th grader and it was perfect for each of them.

After each lesson is completed, the student simply clicks "complete and continue" and the next lesson or assignment opens up. If there are website images or hyperlinks, you just click them and they open up in new tabs (LOVE THIS!). If you see a video, you click it to get it started. If you get lost somewhere along the way or don't remember where you left off, simply go to the left side of the screen and look at your course menu. The lessons that are completed have check marks--so just click the next one in line.

Our unit study began with basic chitchat about scientific theory as well as introducing some of the free reading book club ideas to go with the topics. With the book club, there is a commenting box where the students can talk to each other about the books they are reading.

Unfortunately, we couldn't get any of them, so we just went to the library and found some other solar system themed books to work through.

There are eight modules and a final project in this unit study. Each module could easily be completed in a week as there are three to four lessons in a module--typically 2 lessons, a project, and a book club discussion. It would totally be possible to do multiple modules in a week if your students wanted to move quickly. But I think a week per module works best. At this point, we are finishing up our 6th module working through one per week.

The lessons are mixed media collection of internet materials. Some are videos, some are slideshows, some are readings, some are diagrams/images. Most of the lessons have quizzes to check the comprehension--they are all multiple choice/true or false. Every module also has a project--this is where the experiments, data collection, or art projects happen.

These projects were amazing because they TEACH my sons how to insert data into excel like spreadsheets using the ONLINE resource Google Sheets. Not only do they learn how to enter the data, but they learn how to tweak their chart AND how to turn the data into a graph.

Side note: I had NO IDEA that Google Sheets was so amazing, nor had I ever used it before! I am well versed with excel, but having an ONLINE option for this was a serious bonus for me as a teacher! I even was able to upload the Google Sheets app to my phone!

My boys took turns recording the data--it worked well having one read the information off and the other to record it. We recorded the number of sunspots from 1960-2014, compared the data of average hi/low temps for our city in Kentucky with my sister-in-law in Arizona, recorded information from our Gallileo experiment, and recorded planet data to compare different aspects. 

Our art project kicked off the course and we all enjoyed using chalk pastels to create a solar system.

We enjoyed adding planet identification apps to my iPhone so we could observe the night skies more clearly.

And I look forward to the final project that we will be completing in 2 weeks--making a solar system model. The course offers different suggestions on how this can be completed and encourages the students to share their creations on social media.

Okay--so what about the boys? What did they think?

They loved it. They enjoyed varied videos and information. One of their most favorite activities was the Mars exploration activity where they got to completed a "realistic walk-through of a 3-D model of a Mars base for the first humans to land on Mars. Over 100 images representing a Mars habitat, a greenhouse, a Mars car, and robot rovers." I think they spent about 30 minutes looking at every single thing in that walk-through activity!

I think the boys will be really sad to finish this unit study. It's been so nice to let them have their independence working through the program. They worked together to answer all the quizzes helping one another remember the answers.

One of the boys enjoyed the data collection activities more than the other--my youngest. He's my math guy, so those activities of entering numbers and making graphs were right up his alley. 

It seems like this unit study is about an 8 week study. Unfortunately, there isn't an entire year's worth of science unit studies available from this company yet. The online studies available cover a range of topics from science to history to holidays to fine arts. I think these would be excellent for someone who is getting started with homeschooling and just needs something to take some burden off the planning. They would also be useful for a family on the go--like an RV homeschooling family--who needs the option of schooling WITHOUT papers. And of course, for the unit study family who wants everything already laid out for them! 

I think the biggest selling points of this product are:

1. Completely online--no extra resources or paper needed

2. Complete planned out for you--just turn the kids loose

3. Kid-Friendly and engaging!

These three things set this product apart from all the other unit studies I have explored for my family. I would absolutely use this product again!

CrossWired Science~ A Smorgasbord of Science for Your Family {Curriculum Review}

KidsEmail.org~ A Safe (and FUN!) Email Service for Kids {Product Review}

My boys don't have access to a computer for much more than online assignments, but every now and then, I know they have wished for their own email to send messages to their grandparents and friends. I also have wished they had one for some of our online curriculums, but because of my personal experiences with so many email providers, I did not want to sign them up with any that I have used myself. When I learned about KidsEmail.org with their powerful and safe email for kids, I knew that this would be a great review for us and looked forward to trying out our Annual Subscription.

About KidsEmail.org

KidsEmail.org is a safe and powerful email resource for your children. Offering top of the line filtering and settings for you to use on your child's email accounts, they promise that your child will be able to use their email safely. With options for mail monitoring, time restrictions, block senders, approved contact lists, a mail queue to catch unapproved contact emails, no ads (ever!), and the option for GPS tracker on the KidsEmail app, this isn't your "normal" email service provider. Your child's safety is first and foremost in their priorities. 
The subscription service to this website is available as a monthly and annual subscription (best price!) with a 30 day free trial option. 
We were blessed with an annual subscription to this email service which was used by both boys--ages 6 and 10.

Our Thoughts on KidsEmail.org

KidsEmail.org was very very user friendly and I had no trouble at all getting my two boys set up with their email accounts. I appreciated the extensive list of approved settings for their email--which can be individualized, or set for ALL users. 
This includes the following options found in "Safety Settings": *option to receive and/or send email to contact list only (yes or no) *option to allow child to edit their on contact list (yes or no) *send parent a copy of incoming/outgoing email (yes or no) *allow images, links, or attachments (with option for more specific settings in these) *option to allow bad words in received email (yes or no) *add tagline about it being a kids email with safety features to emails *option to send email sender a notification of their mail going into a mail queue for approval
There is also the ability to limit the time your child can access their email account which can be customized by child or for whole group:

We had issues with this because it kept trying to change our time zone, so it wouldn't let the boys log in some mornings saying we were in a restricted time. I had to tweak this a few times. I hope it will be a bug that can be worked out.

You can also set up a special background screen for your child--or let them pick their own. I guessed what my boys would like--but they ended up changing it once they logged into their own accounts.

A unique and excellent setting--especially for the teens is the "Ground Child" option where you can set up a suspension of use for the email and it will send them a message that this is part of their grounding consequences.

Once you have set up a contact list, any other emails that are sent to your child, will be going into YOUR mail queue, where you get to approve or block the non-approved contact list emails. Here is an example of an email I sent from one of my non-approved for their contact list emails:

We only had one problem with an email that went straight to their inboxes, without hitting the mail queue, but it was still from me. I just sent it from one of their online curriculum. Because this WASN'T the way it was supposed to work, I emailed their customer service with my concern. They answered right away that they would look into it, and continued to check back in. It apparently happened to other of the crew members from the SAME website, but last I checked they weren't sure why or how it was happening because it couldn't be replicated. While I know I personally sent this email to the boys, I would be concerned if it happened again. BUT KidsEmail does NOT give out their list of emails to anyone or any other service, so I highly doubt that it will happen as just random emails sent out. Even the administrator emails FROM KidsEmail that they sent to test, went into my mail queue, so we think it was some kind of fluke.

A few special aspects of the email for kids itself--the kids can use the PAINT option and attach custom drawn pictures with the paint tool. My boys LOVED drawing pictures for their grandparents and sending them.

There is also the option for a received email to be read aloud to your child. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to get that option to work, but if it DID work, I think it would be great for my youngest who can't read very well yet. 

Another option is that this email service is compatible with tablets and devices--even having their own app for android and iOS. I added the app to my Kindle and the boys LOVE using it, as it is easier for them to log in, has more emoticons, and has an "add photo" option where they can attach a picture they take. The boys found it very very easy to navigate, however, they don't like that it won't let them just start a NEW email. It will instead "reply" to whomever they last read. On the laptop, clicking "write email" opens up a new draft for adding your own contacts. 

As of right now, the boys BOTH love having their own email, and take great pleasure out of sending their grandparents emails every morning--and even more pleasure in receiving emails. Because we don't allow computer use beyond school, I set up a checking email time for them at the beginning and ending of each day, which works perfect. 

Both have just one complaint--they would appreciate it if the PAINT option would SAVE whatever their current drawing is. I had MUCH wailing and gnashing of teeth when they accidentally forgot to hit "attach to email" and then they lost their hard work. 

All in all, I appreciated how I could customized every setting for the boys and that I knew they would only receive mail from approved contacts. I hate ads, and I love that they don't have to worry about them. I am not concerned that someone is going to get their emails without my approval, because of the failsafe of the mail queue for non-approved contact emails. Sure there is always the chance that a hacker may get it--but that's true for anything. I feel much more confortable with my boys using this email service that any of the ones I have ever used--no matter how strict of filters you can set up.

Would I Recommend KidsEmail.org?

I absolutely would recommend this email service to anyone with kids and teens looking for a safe option, that allows parental monitoring and filtering. I also appreciate that your child can shift to a teen login and subsequent more grown up email address (kmail instead of kidsemail) while allowing you the same safety precautions. The price at just $2.99/month for an annual subscription is worth every penny--especially since it is valid for up to SIX email accounts! I will definitely be considering continuing our subscription after it has completed next year--particularly for my oldest. I encourage you to do the TRY IT FREE FOR 30 DAYS option(no CC is required for trial!) to see how it works for you!

One of the things I appreciate the most about having access to online programs, is the ability to find things to supplement what I am already using in our homeschool. We don't really grade, but I still like to do assessments on the subjects we are covering, but not all of our curriculum comes with them. CHSH-Teach: The Christian HomeSchool Hub for Educational Materials {Product Review}

As a homeschool parent, I am thankful for websites that offer printables to supplement my curriculum. It can be tricky to keep track of everything I find, however, when I have to pull it from all different blogs or websites. I recently was given an annual subscription of the CHSH Download Club to review for CHSH-Teach.com, the Christian HomeSchool Hub, a website offering over 50,000 downloadable pages of educational material. Needless to say, I was intrigued and eager to give this website a try.

Using CHSH-Teach.com

I found that using this website was very straight forward. I logged in and then just started looking around. I found that on the home page, you can see a calendar which links up to any daily events, observances, or holidays which could be used for educational planning. (for instance, for 9/8 there is a link about the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900). These events can be sent to your own calendar with a quick click. Scrolling down the homepage also shows me a nice detailed index of categories separated into "by subject", "By grade", and "By Month". Because I was curious, I clicked on the link for Bible Related Resources. This section contains everything from a Bible Atlas, to sermon notes, to scripture memory verses, to puzzles and games...and more. 

I just kept looking around, and the first thing I found that really caught my eye were some Character Trait unit studies. I really wanted to add this kind of thing, so I looked into it. I loved it. It's a 40 week unit study of 40 different character traits--good and bad--using literature to learn more about what each trait "looks" like.

I decided that instead of downloading the entire volume, I was just going to pick units as I went, so I started with Responsible and Perseverance. Each unit is three pages long. The first is a colorful poster explaining the character trait and what it is with a little cartoon of a child exhibiting it. The second page is a worksheet to teach your child about the trait with places for them to fill in things like what it looks like, times when they did it, people (real and imaginary) who display it, and examining themselves for it. There is also a section with either quotes, or facts relating to the character trait. The third page is a literature character study. Picking a character from a story that demonstrates the trait--and then writing your evidence to support your choice. The unit also comes with a suggested list of books to be read for each week.

While I don't have the books that are part of the unit, I do have a copy of William Bennett's Book of Virtues which has been PERFECT for these units. We have been working on these over the last few weeks.
Other than various single page printables for either boy, I've also recently discovered the Monthly Learning Packs for grades K-2. These were just uploaded for September, and I snagged the one for first grade. It has over 200 pages of daily worksheets that can be done. I just fell in love with the style of them, and I printed off 20 pages of them right away for Baby Britches. He REALLY enjoys them with their mix of problems and activities.

I look forward to snagging these for each month--and snagging the 2nd and 3rd grade ones when they come out to save for later. 
I also explored their literature section and printed out a literature unit for the book Shiloh which I know my boys will enjoy working through with me. With 9-11 around the corner, I am going to be using their September 11th teaching materials this year. I have checked out some of their delightful organization materials too, including their awards/diplomas. I just discovered their "curriculum treasures of the past" section where they have digital version of some very old classic wonderful readers including "The Arithmetic Reader for Second Grade" which is a very cute reader that also teaches math. I'm going to be using that one with my youngest who LOVES math and will probably like reading about it too.
I have only scratched the surface of what this website offers, but these are the things I have checked out the most.
I also peeked in the forum and other of the social parts and discovered that no one appears to really be using them. I checked out other members from my state and the last post was from late last year. I think it would be handy to have a forum like that, but only if it's being used. I did notice that there was a place to read homeschool laws, Christian Daily Devotionals, and a place for members to add their photos.
It appears that members can also upload their own materials, but I didn't have a chance to check that out.

My Thoughts

I have appreciated every item that I have downloaded from this website. They are easy to implement and very useful in what they offer. I like that there is something from nearly every single subject for all grades. 
My favorite finds so far have been the Character Trait Unit Studies and the September Activity Packs. These were instantly added to my curriculum and have been a wonderful addition, as we have been using them every day. There are many things that I have my eye on to check out, and will be visiting many other areas.
I find helpful that when you click "download", the printable opens up as a pdf instead of going straight to my computer. This lets me check it out before deciding whether or not I want to save it. 
After using this program for a while, one of the main things I wish it would let me do, is to SAVE something in like a "for later" basket. There are times I don't want to download or print something right away, but would like to save it to check out in more detail later, but I don't want to hunt for it again. It would be nice if this was an option for a member. 
I have been enjoying seeing the newest downloads as soon as I click the download catalog. That's how I found the September Activity packet. I have found odds and ends that way too.

I have used extensively, the option to search for keywords in search boxes, but also love having the ability to look for things by grade, by subject, and by month (for seasonal). This makes it very easy to navigate through what there is to offer.
Will I continue to use this website? Absolutely. It is also something I think would be very valuable every year, and I think I'm going to maintain my membership to this site.

Would I Recommend CHSH-Teach.com?

I would highly recommend this website. It has so many fabulous resources and materials. I love that it even has full curriculum in a lot different areas that I use regularly. Because it's a downloadable website, I can use the material as many times as I need to, but I don't have to store it myself. This is a major plus for all of us with limited space and a desire for new materials. Whether you are looking for simple worksheets to add, full spelling curriculum, bible notebooking, or character trait training, these are just a sample of the goodness that is included in this fabulous website.  I don't know what kind of homeschool wouldn't need or want to use the downloads available on this website, so I don't know who NOT to recommend it to. LOL.

After using this website for the last several weeks, I am so glad to know that I have this in my arsenal for the upcoming year. Every time I visit the website and look around in the downloads, I find more and more that I am eager to use this year.
