Mary Poppins Returns: Wholesome and Refreshing {a Movie Review}

As parents, we work hard to monitor what movies and TV shows our children watch. When we were little ourselves, we knew that we were good as long as it was a Wonderful World of Disney movie. You know what I’m talking about—remember how it would come on every Sunday night? Oh how I loved all those movies—Pollyanna, The Parent Trap (the original of course), The Love Bug, Davy Crockett, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Shaggy Dog…the list could go on and on. Those movies were great family entertainment. Unfortunately, movies today do NOT have the same level of wholesomeness—and it seems Disney is one of the worst offenders these days. Because of this, we have only taken our WHOLE family to the movie theater three times to watch new movies—preferring to preview them ourselves to make sure they will be okay. I mean—children’s movies---DISNEY movies rated PG-13? Come on! Last night, we took a chance. Last night, my husband treated the WHOLE family to the new Mary Poppins Returns movie, hoping and praying that it would be everything we ADORED about the original—especially the wholesome goodness. I am here to let you know that we found a rare diamond in this world of trash! Today, I decided to give you just a family review of the Mary Poppins Returns movie. The Amish Letters series by Kathleen Fuller follows the three Amish couples whose lives were changed because of a letter. This trilogy was one of my first experiences with books by Kathleen Fuller and I quickly decided I enjoyed her style of writing, even though Amish fiction isn’t my favorite thing to read. While Amish fiction isn’t my favorite to read, I have found a few authors that I do enjoy with their “not-so-cookie-cutter” presentation of the unique culture. It's officially December, and that means it's full on crochet time! I have so many projects that I want to get done or have started or have on deck. Just a quick note to let you know that I am alive and plan to do some blogging soon. This last month has been a blur and the next one doesn't look like it's going to be much slower! But for now, I'm enjoying that today is Friday. Which means tomorrow starts the weekend with my Sabbath rest day, my most favorite day of the week. It's also my anniversary tomorrow. Hard to believe it's 16 years. Wow.  As I said, there will be more later. So for now, I just wish you a most wonderful and peaceful weekend. 💙 *****

Just Checking In to Say...

Just popping in really quick to let you know that I am here and have a whole bunch of posts I want to share with you that AREN'T review posts, but I am super incredibly busy right now. I am getting bogged down as we finish our harvest season here and also prepare to attend and worship at the Feast of Tabernacles in Florida in just 8 more days. I am confessing that we haven't even kicked off our 2018-2019 school year officially yet, even though we've been doing partial days here and there. It's just been TOOOOOO crazy around here with all we have going on. Thankfully, with homeschooling, you get that freedom to adjust your schedule as needed. There are some exciting things that I want to share about including being a founding member of the brand new Lewis County Homeschool Co-Operative which leads to a BUNCH more responsibilities on my plate--but it is going to be so worth it. I'm hoping to have a chance to sit down and blog about some of the things I've got going on in life, around the farm, school, and a few recipes, but I don't see that really happening until I get home from our trip. But I hope you will still keep checking in with what we've got going on here on the farm.

Favorite Curriculum

There are lovely benefits to homeschooling in the city. You have access to culture and resources at your fingertips. So much of our nation's history resides in large cities. Museums, zoos, aquariums, parks, historical structures, large co-ops, sports leagues, large libraries, and so much more. These are all things that rural homeschoolers (especially extremely rural) typically do not have access too. It can be frustrating at times being isolated in the country when you are homeschooling, but there are also some incredible blessings. If you have multiple children that you are homeschooling, you may find yourself going crazy creating schedules for everyone. Most families use customized curriculum for each student to make sure they get what they need for grade level work. While this is a great path and one that I've been taking for a few years, I have decided to try a different route this year. Even though my boys are 4 years apart (grades 3 and 7 this year), we are going to be using the SAME curriculum for both boys. Lessons from Arts & Crafts (Summer Camp 2018)

For the last several days, we have been enjoying our annual trip to our church pre-teen summer camp in Northern Ohio. This was my 6th year and even though I typically work as a counselor for the youngest girls dorm, I "got a break" and worked as activity staff in the Arts and Crafts class. This class is my second most favorite place to work because unlike most of the other activities that encourage working as a team and don't allow for much interaction, we interact ALL THE TIME with our kids that come through. Our usual job is to help these kids make their imagination become real using various craft tools.

I have written many times about unit studies and lapbooks and why our family enjoys them. One of the favorite companies for us is Home School in the Woods. We have reviewed several of their products over the last few years with great success. We recently had another chance to review on of their great products and have been enjoying putting together another one of the Hands-on History Activity-Paks, this time working through The Old Testament.   

About The Old Testament Hands-on History Activity-Pak
