The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls Series~ Part 3 {Book Review}

You can imagine the joy when I was able to let my youngest son know we were going to be reviewing the next two installments in his favorite series Secret of the Hidden Scrolls from WorthyKids Books! He was soooo bummed when he finished book #4, and I didn't have the next book ready to go. As soon as Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd's Stone (Book 5) and Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion's Roar (Book 6) arrived, he eagerly grabbed book #5 and disappeared. Would the next two books in the series be just as loved as the previous four? Join me today for our review of these latest installments in the Secret of the Hidden Scrolls series by M. J. Thomas!

About The Product

The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls book series is published by WorthyKids Books. This book series is geared for ages 6-9 and is biblical fiction. The series revolves
around siblings Peter and Mary who are sent to be with their Great-Uncle Solomon for a summer. While there, they discover ancient mysterious scrolls collected by their Great-Uncle, which transport them back in time to key moments in biblical history as soon as they break the seal. While back in time experiencing the bible event, the siblings must also solve a riddle before they can come home.

Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Shepherd's Stone (Book 5) takes us back in time to the life of young David. Peter and Mary meet young David as he's preparing to take food to where the Israelite army is encamped and get to witness the giant Goliath taunting the army. Peter and Mary help prepare David for his upcoming battle as well as try to figure out the secret message in their scroll. And things get even more complicated when an old enemy shows up. Can a shepherd's stone really win a battle?

Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Lion's Roar (Book 6) moves us forward in bible history to the time of the great city of Babylon. Peter, Mary, and their dog Hank open a seal on a new scroll and find themselves in the ancient city of Babylon. Upon their arrival, they discover that a new law has been put in place forbidding prayer to anyone except the king. They discover that their new friend Daniel is in the bull's eye and suddenly get caught up in the plot when a sneaky high priest decides to have them join Daniel in the lions' den! Will they solve their latest scroll riddle in time?

Our Thoughts on the Product

My son was eager to start with book #5 as he’d begged me for it, back when he’d finished #4. He started it and couldn’t put it down. He loved the story of David and he took great joy out of figuring out the hidden scroll’s message BEFORE the kids in the story did and shared with me that he already knew who the mysterious man in black was.
HAD to take it with him
I think he most looked forward to reading book #6. This is because he’s been on a kick about all things related to Babylon and the stories in the book of Daniel. He loved the there was mention of BOTH key stories in Babylon in the book (the children meet Shadrach who is now a storekeeper, through the events of the story. He shares his own trials with not obeying what someone in authority tells them to do that goes against his beliefs.) When I asked my son what part was his favorite--he said "All of it? I really did like all of it the best! And Hank. I like Hank too." Hank is the dog. LOL.

One of the other highlights of the books is definitely the illustrations. We love the little pen and ink illustrations and pop up in the story.

In regards to the series itself, I think it would be possible to start at any point in the series, yet I don’t know that I would say they are stand-alone. The stories frequently mention events or people from previous “adventures,” so I would totally recommend reading the series in order if possible. 100% necessary? No. Suggested? Yes.

This series really is an excellent way for children to explore famous and exciting biblical events. The stories are exciting and the books are just the right length for elementary chapter books. I am so glad that I have been able to review all six of the ones that are currently available and to own them. The next book in the series will move forward in time to the exciting arrival of Christ to earth. It will be interesting to see how the series continues—if it does—into the New Testament adventures. I could easily see the books letting the children meet the disciples on the boat in the storm when Christ walks on the water, or some of the people who were healed by Christ, or the conversion of Paul. Yes, so many possibilities!
