5 Days of Favorite Family Recipes: Easy-Peasy Pizza Crust

Thanks for coming back here for another day of favorites! Do you have a weekly pizza night? We do. It's every Thursday here. Some weeks we order takeout and other weeks I make it myself. I have an awesomely simple pizza crust that is a big hit every time I use it.

pizza crust recipe

This is an excellent recipe for a few reasons:
1. It is a quick dough...short rising time
2. This recipe makes enough dough for two pizzas.
3. The dough makes a crispy crust!

This recipe is also nearly fool-proof. It's that easy. I hope you will give it a try so you can enjoy a homemade pizza that is awesome. My husband says it's the crust that makes it. I just know that it's good.

5 Days of Favorite Family Recipes: Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner

So far this week I've share recipes for Australian Damper Loaf and Beef Tacos w/DIY Taco Seasoning...but today I'm going to take a step back from food and share with you a Favorite Family Recipe that is good for you...to clean with!
homemade all purpose cleaner

We threw out our store bought cleaners, once I started making my own versions with MUCH healthier and safer ingredients. I've discovered that my cleaners work just as well (and sometimes even BETTER) than anything that I've used before. And they still smell good and are good for sanitizing my home! After looking at several different recipes and trying out different ingredients, I recently came up with a *favorite* ingredient combo for a Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner that I want to share with you!

The best place to find the large 28-oz empty spray bottles is a dollar store--they have them at Dollar General, Family Dollar, and Dollar Tree. WalMart is another option or any other grocery store with cleaning products. But the best price is going to be your dollar stores. Make sure you label it after it's filled up so you don't forget what is in it! Especially if you have several of them with homemade mixes!

To fill the bottle, I suggest a funnel. It offers you the highest chance of success...take this advice from one who had to clean up her counter when she tried to "freehand" the pouring of the liquids. LOL!

I have tried recipes that call for vinegar and not the alcohol. They work good. But there is something about this one that seems to work better on my counters for taking off dried yucky stuff. You could use Vodka in it's place if you so desire.

You can buy a box of washing soda at most grocery stores in the laundry detergent section. This recipe calls for a tiny amount, but washing soda is in a lot of other homemade cleaners AND you can use it in my Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent recipe too. It's also great as a general add in for laundry.

Liquid castile soap can usually be found in stores with organic or natural food and body products sections. I know you can get it at Fred Meyers, Kroger, Jungle Jims, and Trader Joe's to name a few. I like to use the citrus scented one in my cleaners, but any will work.

I have tried a LOT of different essential oil combinations in my cleaners. The main ones that you find in recipes across the board for homemade versions are usually Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon and Tea Tree. This is because these are disinfectant wonders! Not only do they have incredible anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties, but they smell good too!

If you count up the drops of essential oil it adds up to 25 drops of oil. If you don’t have some of these that I have listed, you are more than able to change them out for what you do have! Simply adjust the number of drops for the oils you have!

Here are some other anti-microbial essential oils that you could try too:
Basil, Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Fir, Juniper, Lemongrass, Orange, Oregano, Peppermint, Pine
If you have a name brand oil blend like Thieves (Young Living), Purify (doTerra), or something similar, you could use that too! I like to swap out the Lemon and Lime, replacing them with 5 drops of Purify when using this recipe.
Are you seeking a supplier of essential oil--maybe even looking for organic essential oils? I have nothing but good to say about the quality of the essential oils I have purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs
Organic herbs, spices, teas and oils.
They are one of the few companies that carries certified organic essential oils. They are very high quality and I have purchased nearly all of my single oils from them. Their price is very reasonable and you can order straight from their website. They carry a wide range of oils--including the exotic ones.

Enjoy using this fresh smelling and disinfecting all-purpose cleaner for your counters, cabinets, refrigerator, blinds, tile, sinks, tubs...just about anything with a surface that needs cleaning!
(Except laminate floors. It's too harsh for that. Trust me on this one.)

5 Days of Favorite Family Recipes: Beef Tacos with DIY Taco Seasoning

Welcome back to Day 2 in my 5 Day series where I am sharing with you some of our favorite family recipes. Yesterday I shared a delicious Australian Damper Loaf and I hope you snagged that yummy bread recipe. Today we are going spicy with my easy and delicious favorite Taco Recipe!

Tacos are easy right? I admit it. This one is a no-brainer, but it's a favorite just the same! Here's a quick run-thru of our recipe...

Our Favorite Beef Tacos

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Onion (chopped)
Fresh or Frozen Peppers (Chopped)
1-2 lbs of ground beef
1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
1 can corn (drained)
2 T. DIY Taco Seasoning (it's the best ever!)
OR 1 pkg taco seasoning
Water

1. Drizzle oil in your cast iron skillet and heat on med-low until just before smoking. Add in your peppers and onions and saute them to release their oils and flavors--you know how much your family will like, which is why I didn't add quantities! But beware, my DIY Taco Seasoning is rather hot--so don't go overboard with your peppers unless you want to breathe fire! LOL!

2. Once the peppers and onions are soft and starting to change color, add in your ground beef. Work it really good so soak up the flavors of the onions and peppers. Brown and drain (if needed).

3. Now stir in the beans and corn; cook for about 5 minutes to heat them up and mix in the flavors.

4. Add in your taco seasoning and needed water. If you are using my seasoning, then add in 3/4 cup of water. Stir very well to mix. Turn heat down to low, cover and let simmer for 5-8 minutes.

Serve hot!

Now--what do I serve my tacos with? Our family is pretty particular when it comes to what goes with our tacos. We are a bit of tortilla snobs. LOL! We either want to eat the ones that I make [Homemade Tortillas Recipe] or the ones that I buy at Costco.

As the package says they are uncooked, so I just take out however many I need and cook them on my flat cast iron griddle lickedy-split. There is always much weeping and gnashing of teeth if I run out of these! LOL! I love them because they are so convenient--but most of all...because they only have FIVE ingredients AND no leavening agents which means we can still eat them while we are observing Unleavened Bread. You can't eat most of the other store-bought flour tortillas. But both these and my homemade tortillas are without leavening (baking soda, baking powder, yeast) for which we are very thankful since we eat tacos...a lot!

In cases where we run out of tacos, our next choice are these great organic chips...
These are organic, gluten-free, stone-ground and light. They aren't like the thick corn tortilla chips you usually find. These are very crunchy and delicious. I buy them at Kroger (the East Coast version of Fred Meyers).

We usually serve tacos with the BEST MEXICAN RICE EVER...seriously. You need to try this recipe from The Tidy Nest. Out of this world!

Everyone in our family loads up their tacos differently, but the result is the same---happy eaters!
Why not make tonight a Taco Night?!!

5 Days of Favorite Family Recipes: Australian Damper Loaf

Hello and happy Monday! I have something special in store for you this week! I am delighted to be taking part in the Schoolhouse Crew's 5 Days of... Blog Series this week! All the members of the series are sharing with you 5 days of something! It might be related to homeschooling, housekeeping, finances, books, gardening, cooking...anything is possible!

For all of my readers, I am finally giving you what I've been owing you for a long time...RECIPES! Yes, it's going to be a recipe week!
Favorite Family Recipes Blog Series
The first recipe I want to share with you is a recipe that I've had FOREVER, but have only recently pulled back out to make. I am so happy I re-discovered it because we've been absolutely LOVING it!
Australian Damper Loaf Recipe

The Australian Damper Loaf is incredibly easy to make. It is really easy to knead--making it perfect for bread newbies. Best of all, you get this perfect little loaf of bread that has a fabulous crunchy crust with a delightful soft inside. Did you know you the already smallish loaves can be made smaller? The perfect bread bowl for your favorite homemade soup!

I am adding the link to the printable recipe at the end of the post--so if you want to just scroll down, you'll find it after my step-by-step recipe!
Let's get started!

1. Preheat your oven to 325◦F and grease an 8" round cake pan.
2. In a small bowl, soften 1 pkg active dry yeast (1 1/2 T bulk quick yeast) in 1/4c of warm water (110◦F) for 5 minutes. Stir in 1 c. warm milk; set aside.

3. In a bowl, mix 3 cups flour, 1 Tbl. baking powder, and 3/4 tsp. salt.
4. With your fingers, cut or rub 2 Tbl. butter into flour mixture until fine crumbs form.
5. Add milk mixture; stir until evenly moistened.

This is going to be turning it into a wet dough. If it's runny, you will need to add a bit more flour but don't add too much. It needs to be wet and a sticky at this point.

6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth.
This is what it will look like when you first pour it out of your bowl.

Cover your hands with plenty of flour so you don't feel it wet and sticky. Then just work it like you were trying to do Play-Dough. Don't over think it! LOL! Just keep mashing, then folding over. Then mash it and fold it. Each time you are adding a bit of flour as needed.

It won't take long---not more than 5-10 minutes--before the texture turns smooth like this.

7. Shape dough into a lumpy round loaf about 5-6" in diameter---or into two smaller loaves if preferred.

I just did one loaf for our dinner this time.

9. Dust lightly with flour, then place in your greased round cake pan (or baking stone).
10. With a sharp knife, cut an X about 1/2" deep and 3" long across the center of the loaf.

11. Bake on bottom rack until well browned, about 55 minutes.
12. Remove from pan and let cool on a rack for 5-10 minutes, then serve warm and ENJOY!

Mmmm. It makes such a nice crunchy outer crust! But when you cut it or pull it apart, it's so soft on the inside! I could eat it just like it is with lots of butter! {Nom Nom Nom!}

I think the thing I like the most is that it's super easy, has basic ingredients, doesn't require a rise time and makes a nice smaller loaf. It's also very easy to double the recipe if you desire MORE loaves.
