Art History Comes Alive with HiGASFY! {Curriculum Review}

HiGASFY~ An Art History Video Series {Curriculum Review}I love art. I love history. I don't necessarily love art history. We have found that most art history is either too teacher dependent, or it's rather boring. We've tried a variety of programs and books. Some of the top named curriculums. Yet we've never "loved" it enough to keep doing it. Enter the HiGASFY Art History Video Series and their online art history lessons and curriculum bundles. For the last several weeks, we've been reviewing a 3-month subscription to the HiGASFY Art History Video Series and the boys are eager to share their thoughts on the new (to us) program.

About The Product

HiGASFY is an art history program with a “real” teacher via video lessons, hands-on activities, and much more that is designed to introduce students to the world of art history. The teacher (Mrs. Beth) and her assistant (a drop of paint named Gasfy), help the students explore the world of art through personable and interesting lectures that are shared like stories--hence the name "Have I Got A Story For You!".

Exploring CTCMath with Elementary and Middle School {Product Review}

CTCMath~ Online Math Resource {Product Review}
Math. That word can dredge up oh so many emotions in our children. One of my sons gets excited and will share his love for it. The other spits it out like it tastes bad when he says it. Over the years we have tried and discarded many math programs for my oldest son. One company, however, has made frequent stops along the way. Today I'm going to share our THIRD experience with 12-month Family Membership, from CTCMath and show you why this is one of the few math programs that my oldest son is willing to use.

About the Product

CTCMath is an online program designed to be used as an online math tutor. The program allows the student to work at their own pace, to stop and "rewind" the teacher during a lesson until they get what is

Simply Music: Online Piano Lessons for All Ages {Product Review}

I have been playing the piano for 35 years. I taught piano for about 10 years. But in that time I haven't had "time" to teach my own children. I have one son who isn't interested at all, so I haven't pushed it. My youngest son, however, is more drawn to learning music. When we had the chance to review Simply Music and their Music & Creativity - Foundation Course, I decided it was the perfect time to get him started.

About the Program

Simply Music was created to offer students of all ages the ability to learn music and to love music without the traditional approach of music reading first. Designed to immediately immerse the

Solar System: Online Unit Study from Techie Homeschool Mom {Curriculum Review}

Solar System Online Unit Study Review
If you have been a follower of the blog for a while, you know by now that our family does really well with unit studies when it comes to homeschooling certain topics. We love being able to bring together different resources and dive down different rabbit trails as we explore a topic. One of the hardest parts about a unit study, however, is the gathering of materials. They tend to be much more intensive in their preparation--one of the reasons some homeschool parents just can't do them. I recently was introduced to a series of Online Unit Studies from Techie Homeschool Mom. An online unit study where all the "work" is done for me? That still lets us dive deep into topics with a variety of resources? Something that my kids can do independent of me? Could this even really be true? Join me today as I share our experiences with reviewing the Solar System Online Unit Study from Techie Homeschool Mom--is it really the answer to so many issues with unit studies?

About the Product

Techie Homeschool Mom is the brainchild of homeschooling mom Beth who loves cool web tools and online learning resources. One year she decided to start creating fully Internet-based unit studies for her own children and decided to start offering them the homeschool community. Each Online Unit Study is an eLearning course that focuses on a specific topic but integrates various subjects. The course allows students to access websites and videos in order to learn about a topic. Incorporated into this are hands-on and digital projects to apply what they've learned. Unlike other unit studies, there are NO downloads or paper activities. Everything is recorded ONLINE.

There are several different online unit studies available including:
Ancient Egypt Online Unit Study
Ancient Greece Online Unit Study
Ancient Rome Online Unit Study
Famous Artists Online Unit Study (Vol. 1)
Famous Artists Online Unit Study (Vol.2)
Famous Inventors Online Unit Study
Solar System Online Unit Study

We have been reviewing the Solar System Online Unit Study. This course includes studies on the following areas:

Solar System Overview
The Sun
Planetary Orbits
Gravity
Planets
The Rocky Planets
The Gas Planets
Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors
Project: Solar System Model
As a bonus, along with hands-on projects, students will learn to use Google sheets to record and evaluate scientific data.

We completed this review as a family with both boys working together on the assignments.

Our Thoughts on the Product

First off--I will just go ahead and tell you that this was possibly the EASIEST science course I have ever done. Why? Because I basically didn't have to do anything but pull the course up on my computer. Techie Homeschool Mom did everything else! And--NO BOOKS! Nothing. It truly is a "paper-free" unit study option.

Okay, so now that I have that out of the way, let me share what this program looks like and how we used it. First off, you will need to log in and just start the course. We easily completed all the assignments and videos with a Chrome browser. If you don't have good internet this course WILL have issues as it is 100% internet driven. There aren't any issues with navigation--simply login and get started!

These courses are designed for students who can read and navigate around the internet--so I would put this at starting with 2nd grade and up--unless this is being used by a family. We used it with a 3rd and 7th grader and it was perfect for each of them.

After each lesson is completed, the student simply clicks "complete and continue" and the next lesson or assignment opens up. If there are website images or hyperlinks, you just click them and they open up in new tabs (LOVE THIS!). If you see a video, you click it to get it started. If you get lost somewhere along the way or don't remember where you left off, simply go to the left side of the screen and look at your course menu. The lessons that are completed have check marks--so just click the next one in line.

Our unit study began with basic chitchat about scientific theory as well as introducing some of the free reading book club ideas to go with the topics. With the book club, there is a commenting box where the students can talk to each other about the books they are reading.

Unfortunately, we couldn't get any of them, so we just went to the library and found some other solar system themed books to work through.
Reading about the Solar System

Reading about the Hubble Telescope

There are eight modules and a final project in this unit study. Each module could easily be completed in a week as there are three to four lessons in a module--typically 2 lessons, a project, and a book club discussion. It would totally be possible to do multiple modules in a week if your students wanted to move quickly. But I think a week per module works best. At this point, we are finishing up our 6th module working through one per week.
Sample Page View of a Lesson

The lessons are mixed media collection of internet materials. Some are videos, some are slideshows, some are readings, some are diagrams/images. Most of the lessons have quizzes to check the comprehension--they are all multiple choice/true or false. Every module also has a project--this is where the experiments, data collection, or art projects happen.

Let me take a minute to talk about the data collection projects.
Entering Sunspot Data

Sunspot Data to Record--we chose to print it off

Graphing the data we collected in order to answer questions
These projects were amazing because they TEACH my sons how to insert data into excel like spreadsheets using the ONLINE resource Google Sheets. Not only do they learn how to enter the data, but they learn how to tweak their chart AND how to turn the data into a graph.

Side note: I had NO IDEA that Google Sheets was so amazing, nor had I ever used it before! I am well versed with excel, but having an ONLINE option for this was a serious bonus for me as a teacher! I even was able to upload the Google Sheets app to my phone!

My boys took turns recording the data--it worked well having one read the information off and the other to record it. We recorded the number of sunspots from 1960-2014, compared the data of average hi/low temps for our city in Kentucky with my sister-in-law in Arizona, recorded information from our Gallileo experiment, and recorded planet data to compare different aspects.

Our art project kicked off the course and we all enjoyed using chalk pastels to create a solar system.
The Inspiration for the Art Projects
My Oldest's Rendition

My Version

My Youngest's Solar System

We enjoyed adding planet identification apps to my iPhone so we could observe the night skies more clearly.

And I look forward to the final project that we will be completing in 2 weeks--making a solar system model. The course offers different suggestions on how this can be completed and encourages the students to share their creations on social media.

Okay--so what about the boys? What did they think?
They loved it. They enjoyed varied videos and information. One of their most favorite activities was the Mars exploration activity where they got to completed a "realistic walk-through of a 3-D model of a Mars base for the first humans to land on Mars. Over 100 images representing a Mars habitat, a greenhouse, a Mars car, and robot rovers." I think they spent about 30 minutes looking at every single thing in that walk-through activity!

I think the boys will be really sad to finish this unit study. It's been so nice to let them have their independence working through the program. They worked together to answer all the quizzes helping one another remember the answers.
This takes them to a video for them to watch--and then a comprehension quiz

One of the boys enjoyed the data collection activities more than the other--my youngest. He's my math guy, so those activities of entering numbers and making graphs were right up his alley.

It seems like this unit study is about an 8 week study. Unfortunately, there isn't an entire year's worth of science unit studies available from this company yet. The online studies available cover a range of topics from science to history to holidays to fine arts. I think these would be excellent for someone who is getting started with homeschooling and just needs something to take some burden off the planning. They would also be useful for a family on the go--like an RV homeschooling family--who needs the option of schooling WITHOUT papers. And of course, for the unit study family who wants everything already laid out for them!

I think the biggest selling points of this product are:

1. Completely online--no extra resources or paper needed
2. Complete planned out for you--just turn the kids loose
3. Kid-Friendly and engaging!

These three things set this product apart from all the other unit studies I have explored for my family. I would absolutely use this product again!

Want to Know More?

We have spent the last several weeks reviewing the Solar System Online Unit Study from Techie Homeschool Mom. I encourage you to visit other crew members on this review to see what unit studies they completed to get an idea of the range of options this product provides.

CrossWired Science~ A Smorgasbord of Science for Your Family {Curriculum Review}

Our family has two subjects that we enjoy more than anything else: history and science. We could fill our days with these two subjects and be perfectly content. Of the two, my boys definitely prefer science and I'm always on the hunt for more ways to add science or more ways to explore science topics within our classroom. For the last few weeks, we have been reviewing a new program called CrossWired Science and their first two projects: Sound, and Fluid Dynamics. Our family has laughingly nicknamed this science curriculum "smorgasbord" science and today I am going to share our review of this program and talk about why it did or didn't work with our family--you might be surprised at the answer!

About the Product

CrossWired Science (which I will refer to as CWS) is a new online science curriculum geared for multi-age learning and an eclectic learning style. It can be used as a complete or supplemental curriculum depending on the family needs for a science program. This is a Christian worldview science

Reading Kingdom: Online Reading Program Teaching Phonics-PLUS! {Product Review}

I have discovered that using online reading programs have helped boost my younger son's reading skills. We've used several different programs before, and have been using one we LOVE for almost a year now. When we were given the opportunity to review another reading program--one which is supposed to be more unique and better in its reading and writing instruction, I was eager to try Reading Kingdom and see what it was like. Would we like it even more than the beloved one we use now?

About Reading Kingdom

Reading Kingdom is an online K-3 grade reading program which uses the new Phonics-PLUS system, making it different from any other reading program out there! Learn How to Code with LIVE Online Classes from CodeWizardsHQ {Curriculum Review}

LEARN TO CODE WITH CODEWIZARDHQ~ A REVIEW
It would be safe for me to say that we are NOT a technologically focused family. Other than using social media and a smart phone, we just aren't into the usual things like video or computer games. My boys are clueless when their friends at summer camp talk Minecraft or the like. We don't even OWN a video game console of any type. My husband can't code to save his life. I only code for my blogging and that's with LOTS of help. Needless to say we have little to no interest in computer programming--BUT, we recently had a chance to take a class in beginning code from one of the computer programming courses from CodeWizardsHQ (they also offer classes specifically for homeschoolers as well). How would my son--a hard core farming, non-video game playing, no need for computer programming kid--do with this out-of-his-box course?

A+ Interactive Math: A Program that Identifies and Closes Learning Gaps in Math {Product Review}

A+ Interactive Math~ A Review
The links on this blog and in the posts may be affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for full details and thank you for your support!
Math is one of the only subjects where I wouldn't mind if the boys had assessments every year for homeschool. Why? Because it would be nice to know how each year how they are doing in their respective grade level work based on a third party review. When I first learned about A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) and their Adaptive Math Curriculum Online and Individualized Lesson Plan program, I was very interested and eagerly asked to review this product. I used it with my oldest son at the time at the end of his third grade year--and it was very revealing to how he was doing in math based on a standard third grade math assessment. Now here we are again with a chance to review the same product--THIS time I am using it with my younger math loving child. We've been using three different math curriculum because he just loves math--but I'm always afraid that he's got a hole somewhere that I don't know about. Thus, having HIM work through the 2nd grade math assessment was just what I needed as we wrap up our 2017-2018 year! Would the test find any holes? This is what I hoped our review of this product would find--and I was curious to see if any of my cons from the previous review had been addressed.

Thinking Like an Engineer~ For the STEM loving children in your family! {Curriculum Review}

Thinking Like An Engineer {A review}
We have noticed for awhile that our oldest son demonstrates strengths in engineering skills. He loves to design new LEGO creations and carefully plans and constructs them—far beyond any pamphlet included in a kit. His drawings have always been remarkably detailed and proportionate to real life. He’s most content designing or making something. When I was given the chance to review Innovators Tribe Thinking Like an Engineer self paced course I jumped on it. I hoped that it would be just the thing my son would thrive in doing, and open his mind into considering a degree in engineering in the future.

Take the Stress out of Math with CTCMath {Curriculum Review}

CTCMath Online Math Curriculum Review
A few years ago, we were first introduced to CTCMath and it changed my oldest son's view and attitude on math to the positive. We reviewed it again allowing my youngest to have a go at it. It wasn't a good fit at that time, so we just kept using it for my oldest. This year, we had another chance to review this program and I was curious to see if my youngest would enjoy it more this time and I looked forward to exploring the next grade level for my oldest son. Over the last few weeks we have been reviewing CTCMath's Family Membership with my boys and I have been enjoying seeing them progress through this program! (There is a FREE TRIAL you can try out! Taking to the Skies with Doctor Aviation {Curriculum Review}

We recently completed an in depth unit study on the Wright Brothers, which led to my oldest son becoming fascinated with all things aviation. Immediately after we concluded that unit study, we were told that there was a six month aviation course from Doctor Aviation that was potentially up for review for us. Even though we were below the recommended age for using the program, after one sample lesson my eleven year old was begging me to be able to do it. This led me to "beg" on his behalf for the chance to review this product as a family, and I am happy to say that we were granted his wish. The question now became--how would a course geared towards a high school student or adult work for our family? I am happy to say that it passed with "flying" colors!

About Doctor Aviation

Doctor Aviation is an website dedicated to providing instruction to those with an interest in aviation. The instructor Daryl Smith, aka Doctor Aviation, was in the Air Force for 24 years, where he "traversed the sky" as Command Pilot in a whole host of aircraft putting in over 2,000 flying hours. Many of these were accumulated while he was an instructor pilot and research pilot. He has also served as instructor at the United States Air Force Academy teaching aviation as well as other courses. He also has authored an aviation book published by McGraw Hill. He's a current college professor who wanted to make an aviation course that could be accessible to life-long learners across the globe--and so the Doctor Aviation website and aviation course was created!

The course is geared to anyone with a desire to learn more about aviation, whether looking to it as a

As a homeschooler living in a non-testing for homeschoolers state, there isn't the pressure to have my boys at a certain level academically. BUT, as a mom who does want to make sure they are on track I have always wondered where they would fall. I haven't yet given them any grade testing, but had considered it for the future. The Typing Coach Online Typing Course {Product Review}

The Typing Coach Online Typing Course {Product Review}
One of the areas that we don't have focused attention on in our classroom is typing/keyboarding. We are very "old school" with focused attention on hand writing everything; however, I see the benefit of starting to shift more over to typing assignments for my soon-to-be middle-schooler. There are so many programs out there to teach typing, and most of them are very game like. When I learned about The Typing Coach Online Typing Course from The Typing Coach and its no-nonsense approach to typing--promoting accuracy and speed, I wondered if it would be a good fit for our family.

About The Typing Coach

Creating a Masterpiece: An Online Art Program {Curriculum Review}

Our family loves art. We love doing arts and crafts and trying new mediums. But when it comes to creating from scratch? Nope. No can do. My boys can sketch quite well--vehicles that is. But birds? Beautiful Landscapes? Frameable Art? That would be a no. Enter our review of Creating a Masterpiece. This art program declares that no matter the age, students are capable of creating a masterpiece following the simple instructions provided by the teacher. As we reviewed the Monthly Plan to this program, I wondered if this was true. Could anyone--including my 6 year old create a masterpiece with this program? We dove in with both feet to find out!

CHSH-Teach: The Christian HomeSchool Hub for Educational Materials {Product Review}

As a homeschool parent, I am thankful for websites that offer printables to supplement my curriculum. It can be tricky to keep track of everything I find, however, when I have to pull it from all different blogs or websites. I recently was given an annual subscription of the CHSH Download Club to review for CHSH-Teach.com, the Christian HomeSchool Hub, a website offering over 50,000 downloadable pages of educational material. Needless to say, I was intrigued and eager to give this website a try.
CHSH-Teach.com ~A Review

About CHSH-Teach.com

CHSH-Teach.com was created by veteran educator of 20+ years and homeschooling mom, Linda Ackert. She discovered a love for creating educational materials for teachers and homeschoolers, and just like that, the CHSH-Teach community was created.

CHSH-Teach.com is a place for downloadable materials, a community forum, a blog, and more! A place for homeschooling parents to come seek out JUST the material they need or interact with other families on the forum.

You do not have to subscribe to be able to take advantage of some of what the website has to offer--there are freebies anyone can grab, but to truly enjoy the full plethora of materials available, you should join the CHSH Download Club--50,000+ downloadable pages of educational materials at your fingertips! An annual subscription to the entire site is just $25--and you could get a LIFETIME membership for $99.

We were given an annual subscription of the CHSH Download Club to use with my family.

Using CHSH-Teach.com

I found that using this website was very straight forward. I logged in and then just started looking around. I found that on the home page, you can see a calendar which links up to any daily events, observances, or holidays which could be used for educational planning. (for instance, for 9/8 there is a link about the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900). These events can be sent to your own calendar with a quick click. Scrolling down the homepage also shows me a nice detailed index of categories separated into "by subject", "By grade", and "By Month". Because I was curious, I clicked on the link for Bible Related Resources. This section contains everything from a Bible Atlas, to sermon notes, to scripture memory verses, to puzzles and games...and more.

I just kept looking around, and the first thing I found that really caught my eye were some Character Trait unit studies. I really wanted to add this kind of thing, so I looked into it. I loved it. It's a 40 week unit study of 40 different character traits--good and bad--using literature to learn more about what each trait "looks" like.
The list of the different traits that are covered
I decided that instead of downloading the entire volume, I was just going to pick units as I went, so I started with Responsible and Perseverance. Each unit is three pages long. The first is a colorful poster explaining the character trait and what it is with a little cartoon of a child exhibiting it. The second page is a worksheet to teach your child about the trait with places for them to fill in things like what it looks like, times when they did it, people (real and imaginary) who display it, and examining themselves for it. There is also a section with either quotes, or facts relating to the character trait. The third page is a literature character study. Picking a character from a story that demonstrates the trait--and then writing your evidence to support your choice. The unit also comes with a suggested list of books to be read for each week.
I have been laminating these posters

Writing/Drawing his evidence

Filling out his character trait worksheet
While I don't have the books that are part of the unit, I do have a copy of William Bennett's Book of Virtues which has been PERFECT for these units. We have been working on these over the last few weeks.

Other than various single page printables for either boy, I've also recently discovered the Monthly Learning Packs for grades K-2. These were just uploaded for September, and I snagged the one for first grade. It has over 200 pages of daily worksheets that can be done. I just fell in love with the style of them, and I printed off 20 pages of them right away for Baby Britches. He REALLY enjoys them with their mix of problems and activities.
I look forward to snagging these for each month--and snagging the 2nd and 3rd grade ones when they come out to save for later.

I also explored their literature section and printed out a literature unit for the book Shiloh which I know my boys will enjoy working through with me. With 9-11 around the corner, I am going to be using their September 11th teaching materials this year. I have checked out some of their delightful organization materials too, including their awards/diplomas. I just discovered their "curriculum treasures of the past" section where they have digital version of some very old classic wonderful readers including "The Arithmetic Reader for Second Grade" which is a very cute reader that also teaches math. I'm going to be using that one with my youngest who LOVES math and will probably like reading about it too.

I have only scratched the surface of what this website offers, but these are the things I have checked out the most.

I also peeked in the forum and other of the social parts and discovered that no one appears to really be using them. I checked out other members from my state and the last post was from late last year. I think it would be handy to have a forum like that, but only if it's being used. I did notice that there was a place to read homeschool laws, Christian Daily Devotionals, and a place for members to add their photos.

It appears that members can also upload their own materials, but I didn't have a chance to check that out.

My Thoughts

I have appreciated every item that I have downloaded from this website. They are easy to implement and very useful in what they offer. I like that there is something from nearly every single subject for all grades.

My favorite finds so far have been the Character Trait Unit Studies and the September Activity Packs. These were instantly added to my curriculum and have been a wonderful addition, as we have been using them every day. There are many things that I have my eye on to check out, and will be visiting many other areas.

I find helpful that when you click "download", the printable opens up as a pdf instead of going straight to my computer. This lets me check it out before deciding whether or not I want to save it.

After using this program for a while, one of the main things I wish it would let me do, is to SAVE something in like a "for later" basket. There are times I don't want to download or print something right away, but would like to save it to check out in more detail later, but I don't want to hunt for it again. It would be nice if this was an option for a member.

I have been enjoying seeing the newest downloads as soon as I click the download catalog. That's how I found the September Activity packet. I have found odds and ends that way too.

I have used extensively, the option to search for keywords in search boxes, but also love having the ability to look for things by grade, by subject, and by month (for seasonal). This makes it very easy to navigate through what there is to offer.

Will I continue to use this website?
Absolutely. It is also something I think would be very valuable every year, and I think I'm going to maintain my membership to this site.

Would I Recommend CHSH-Teach.com?

I would highly recommend this website. It has so many fabulous resources and materials. I love that it even has full curriculum in a lot different areas that I use regularly. Because it's a downloadable website, I can use the material as many times as I need to, but I don't have to store it myself. This is a major plus for all of us with limited space and a desire for new materials. Whether you are looking for simple worksheets to add, full spelling curriculum, bible notebooking, or character trait training, these are just a sample of the goodness that is included in this fabulous website.
I don't know what kind of homeschool wouldn't need or want to use the downloads available on this website, so I don't know who NOT to recommend it to. LOL.

Want to Know More?

Over the last few weeks I have been reviewing the CHSH Download Club from CHSH-Teach.com in our homeschool. You have seen the items I have used and loved, but there is so much more to offer by this website! Make sure you check out a few of my fellow crew members to see what products caught THEIR eye!

CHSH-Teach is very active in social media, so make sure you connect with them--especially their newsletter to get FREE downloads!

After using this website for the last several weeks, I am so glad to know that I have this in my arsenal for the upcoming year. Every time I visit the website and look around in the downloads, I find more and more that I am eager to use this year. I encourage all homeschool parents to consider getting yourself a subscription to this delightful and useful website.
